The issue of abortion is not only one that is politically polarizing, but is also fraught with secrecy, guilt, and pain for those who have experienced it. Even though abortion is legal in the United States, as well as many other countries, it is not without internal consequences for those who have had abortions. Many people who have gotten an abortion felt that it was the only way out. For many, they experience immediate guilt or grief, but because it is legal and even encourage—in the case of an unplanned or unwanted pregnancy—it may feel that the only alternative to these equally unwanted emotions is to bury and ignore them.
When God calls something sin, it is sin. Abortion is one of these things. The reality of abortion is that God calls it sin. But there is hope for those who have had an abortion-the same hope offered to all of us-God is gracious and loves us deeply! He has provided a way for us to be forgiven of our sins and to have a relationship with Him!
Yes, we are all sinners. Abortion is only one sin among the many committed by human beings, and there is no human that is not a sinner. All of us are sinners, whether someone has had an abortion, told a lie to their parents about their homework, gossipped about someone, or committed any other sin. Sin is anything that falls short of God’s standard- perfection. Our sin separates us from God, and the penalty for sin is death. However, God, in His deep love for us, sent Jesus Christ, His son to come to earth, to take the form of a man, and to live a perfect life. He went on to suffer and die, paying the price for our sins. He laid down His life, so that we can receive forgiveness and restoration of relationship with God. But we can’t earn this. Nothing that anyone could do would be good enough. This forgiveness and restoration is a gift that cost Jesus His life, but is given freely to us.
How do we receive this gift? He offers it to us. He invites us to come to Him in prayer, to humble ourselves and acknowledge our sin. When we recognize that we are sinners, and repent, by faith, we receive the forgiveness that God offers us. Christ’s death on the cross results in our being declared righteous. I Corinthians 5:17 says that, “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has gone. The new has come.” No matter what you have done- even if you’ve had an abortion- Jesus invites you to come and receive healing and forgiveness. He invites you to be made new!
